Duane Allman and the Allman Brothers Museum

Howard Duane Allman
(November 20, 1946 - October 29, 1971)

You can't live in the South or be a lover of Southern Rock and not know the Allman Brothers Band. Over the years, we seem to lose touch or even forget some of the details of the bands we used to love. Sometimes it's good to reminisce and refresh our memories.

Duane Allman is credited as the greatest slide guitarist that ever lived.

In 1982 Duane was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame and The Allman Brothers Band was inducted in 1998.
1957 Goldtop Les Paul (Layla Guitar)

Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident only months after the summer release and great initial success of At Fillmore East. While in the west part of Macon on October 29, 1971 during a band break from touring and recording, he was riding his motorcycle toward an oncoming Sam Hall and Sons construction truck that was turning well in front of him. The truck suddenly stopped in the middle of the intersection. Duane lost control of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle while trying to swing left, possibly striking the back of the truck or its crane ball. He was thrown from his motorcycle, which landed on him and skidded with him under it, crushing his internal organs. Though he was rushed to the hospital and operated on, he died several hours later, just weeks before his 25th birthday.

Allman Brothers Band bass guitarist Berry Oakley died less than 13 months later in a similar motorcycle crash with a city bus, three blocks from the site of Duane Allman's fatal accident.

After Berry Oakley's crash,  he appeared, at first, not to be seriously injured, but later died. His remains were laid to rest beside Duane Allman's in Macon, at Georgia's Rose Hill Cemetery. Berry Oakley was also a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band.

There are quite a few tribute websites but these are my favorites.

This is the best site. It tells the story in pictures.

Capricorn Records

Capricorn Records is an independent record label which was launched by Phil Walden, Alan Walden, and Frank Fenter in 1969 in Macon, Georgia. Capricorn became famous for its role in spearheading Southern rock, with The Allman Brothers Band at the forefront, but also including the Marshall Tucker Band, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, Jonathan Edwards, Captain Beyond, White Witch, Grinderswitch, Cowboy, and Hydra. At first the records were distributed by Atlantic Records, later changing to Warner Bros. Records, and later to PolyGram Records.

Phil Walden credited Capricorn's eventual success to Duane Allman, who recruited his brother, Gregg, to form the Allman Brothers Band. The brothers' first album, The Allman Brothers Band, was released in 1969 and sold just 33,000 copies. The band's second album, Idlewild South, did little better. In addition to the Allman Brothers Band, Capricorn released albums by Cowboy, Johnny Jenkins, Livingston Taylor, Wet Willie, and others, and finally became its own label, initially distributed by ATCO, in 1971. Capricorn went out of business in 1979. Although resurrected a time or two, the building now stands abandoned and in need of restoration. It is on The Georgia Trust 2010 PLACES IN PERIL: CAPRICORN RECORDING STUDIO. Places In Peril

Football and Avon

Today is a big football day. The teams to play the Superbowl will be determined. Last week, my cute little red-headed grandson, Tommy, did a great job at choosing the winners. That being the case, here's Tommy's picks for today.

Game #1: New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts
Mark Sanchez is Quarterback for the Jets
Peyton Manning is Quarterback for the Colts

Tommy Picks the JETS

Game #2: New Orleans Saints vs Minnesota Vikings
Drew Brees is Quarterback for the Saints
Bret Favre is Quarterback for the Vikings

Tommy Picks the VIKINGS

We will see if Tommy is right again.....

"Rookie QB Mark Sanchez knows the Jets' fate rests in his hands" reads the headlines for The Palm Beach Post

He signed with the Jets ◊6/10/09. Can he get the Jets to the big game?

...... Remember in 1969 when ........

Tommy may be young, but he's got that jersey. His Grandma gave it to him!

Stories From The Old South - Children's Records

I love old children's records and I love things from the old south. One of my favorite movies is "Song of the South". Kiddie Records Weekly offers that record along with other children's old south collectibles.

Clicking on the associated link will bring up a page with a lot of records on it. You will have to click on the actual thumbnail or the title to the left. If you don't want to install a torrent, just right click on each side and save it to your computer. Do that also with the image file to get the record covers. If any of them should turn out to be a dead link, email me and I'll upload them for you since I have them also.

How To Know If You're Ready For Kids

MESS TEST
Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer.

Son-in-Law Baked Spaghetti

When we visited our daughter and her family last October, our son-in-law, Tony, made us baked spaghetti and very successfully showed off his domestic skills. Since my daughter is in the army and they live on base, Tony has become quite the house husband (play on words. Women have been called housewives for years). He cares for the home and our daughter and their 2 sons. He was in the Army during the first Gulf War and served in Iraq during Desert Storm so he's very qualified for his current job "working at home/supporting husband" His spaghetti was as wonderful as his attitude!

I had hoped he would send a picture of him and his spaghetti because it was just beautiful to look at. Since he didn't, I must show you my own process and presentation. Here is the recipe he sent to me (titled by me, of course.)

SON-IN-LAW BAKED SPAGHETTI

1 lb of ground beef
2 16 oz of Ragu sauce (I like the one with sausage in it)
1 package of Angel Hair pasta
1 Pkg Pepperoni
2 pkgs of shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Parmesan cheese to taste
Italian seasoning
Add a small amount of salt to the noodles (a little goes along way)

Make your noodles al dente since they will cook when you put them in the oven. Preheat your stove to 350 while you brown the ground beef (drain grease). Take a large Casserole dish and pour a small amount of Ragu sauce on the bottom. This prevents the food from sticking to the bottom.

Place enough noodles in the dish to cover the bottom. Pour sauce over noodles to lightly cover them, Spread ground beef generously over sauce. Add the pepperoni and you can also add whatever vegetables you like on your pizza into this spaghetti.

Repeat the above steps until it tops the pan.
Spread the Mozzarella cheese over the top and then sprinkle Parmesan cheese over that.

Sprinkle the Italian Seasoning lightly over the dish (very strong flavor.)

Bake at 350 until cheese is lightly browned.

Mom, I also brown the beef with garlic powder sometimes, if I remember, so you might want to try it to see if you like the flavor.  You most likely won't use all the sauce unless you like a lot of sauce.

My variations:

I added thin slices of yellow squash (cooked for 2 minutes in microwave to soften) and fresh spinach and mushrooms. I also added some sliced green onions and some thin tomato slices and I used a little cheddar with the mozzarella. Instead of using the parmesan in a can, I used  shredded parmesan. I did use the garlic powder when browning the beef as he suggested.

This is such a flexible recipe, you can do almost anything you want to! It wasn't quite as good as his but it was very good!

LITTLE JOHNNY'S RIB
A Sunday School teacher was telling the children that God created everything, including human beings.

Little Johnny became fascinated when the teacher told him how Eve was made out of one of Adam's ribs.

Later that week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were in pain, and asked, Johnny, what's the matter sweetie?  Little Johnny replied, "I have a pain in my side!  I think I'm going to have a wife!"
